Farmhouse Style Designs

Looking for a farmhouse home design to suit your estate lot? We have a range of homestead and farmhouse home designs to suit your needs, perfect for estate lots in Western Australia.

What is a farmhouse style design?

So, what exactly is a farmhouse style design? A farmhouse style design is about a return to a simpler, cleaner aesthetic. It’s a classic look that should create a feeling of warmth and simplicity, drawing inspiration from traditional rural homesteads.

Different types of farmhouse home design

Within farmhouse home design, there are several different types of looks. You might prefer a modern farmhouse vibe, a countryside aesthetic or a traditional look.

While each of these styles are slightly different, they will all focus on natural materials like wood, neutral colours like white and earth tones, and comfortable practicality.

Modern

Modern farmhouse style strips back any clutter, with clean lines and an emphasis on open floor plans. You can contrast exposed beams and wide planks with modern design features like metal, industrial fixtures and minimalist furniture to make the traditional bones of your home feel modern and up to date.

Countryside

A countryside farmhouse design is likely to feature a lot of wood and natural materials. It’s a country style home with a sense of history, which you can create through antique furniture and vintage pieces, as well as offsetting that focus on the countryside with large windows, French doors and the ability to blend the inside and outside of the home together.

Traditional

A traditional, classic farmhouse design is likely to have a sturdier feel to it than modern or countryside. Typically, it will be single storey, with a large functional porch, exposed beams and shiplap. If you’re looking for a traditional farmhouse feel, you can incorporate stone and brick with fireplaces and exposed brick to give the home a lived-in, rustic feel.

How does a farmhouse style differ from cottage style?

While farmhouse style homes and cottage style homes both make a feature of simple nostalgia, there are distinct differences. Typically, cottage style homes are smaller with less of a focus on open plan. Their colour palette is brighter and their overall look is more English countryside than Australian homestead.

There are no rules against blending the two styles to create the home you want. Novus Homes is happy to work with you to customise your home design to make sure you get exactly what you want.

What are the hallmarks of a farmhouse style home design?

The hallmarks of farmhouse style design are a long, low and wide frontage, with large front porches, white washed walls, and simple uncluttered lines. Homeowners tend to adapt these characteristics, depending on the block and where they’re planning to build.

Wide frontage

The legacy of a farmhouse’s wide frontage comes from it allowing the farmer better access to the different parts of his working farm. But the wide frontage suits the needs of modern homeowners too. A wide frontage allows maximum natural light into your home, which keeps it feeling bright and airy.

A wide frontage also makes it easy to fit a mudroom or wide hallway into your home design, making it feel spacious, as well as creating lots of storage opportunities.

It also creates aesthetic impact, giving it maximum curbside appeal.

Front porch

A farmhouse’s wide front frontage usually allows for the sweeping front porch associated with farmhouses and traditional Australian homes.

A huge front porch gives you the chance to enjoy your front garden, as well as keeping an eye on your kids or younger family members running around. It also offers an extended entertaining or living space, making it perfect for large families. As well as a connection to nature, it offers a connection to the neighbourhood around you, as you watch the world go by.

Farmhouse style interior design

What type of interior design you bring to your farmhouse depends on your personal taste; there are no rules. Typically, a farmhouse style interior design would feature crisp white walls, and neutral interiors. Think soft greys, taupes and beiges for the soft furnishings.

The emphasis is on comfort, with comfortable, inviting furniture and warm, soft furnishings to add texture. Vintage and antique furniture is popular, with exposed beams, barn doors, rustic elements and open plan living all designed to make the place feel relaxed and welcoming.

Are farmhouse style designs suitable for any block size?

Farmhouse style designs are versatile, and Novus Homes can work with you to make sure that we find a design that accommodates your block, regardless of its size.

If you are hoping to build a farmhouse style design on a narrow block, we can look at a two-storey design, or adapt the floor plan accordingly. There are plenty of opportunities to bring the farmhouse design style into your home.

Estate lots

We have a number of farmhouse floor plans that offer huge open plan kitchen/dining/living areas that flow from the inside to the outside and would be perfect for estate lots.

What is an estate lot?

An estate lot means a large parcel of land that is perfect for custom-built luxurious homes, such as farmhouse style designs.

Our estate lot house plans offer spacious resort style master suites, separate guest bedrooms, an activity area for the kids, and theatre rooms; the list goes on!

Novus Homes' bespoke style

While our farmhouse home designs are often considered by those living on larger blocks of land in the outer suburbs of Perth, you could also consider this style of home for a large corner block in a new estate or in an existing suburb of Perth if you are thinking of a demolish and build project.

We can tailor all our home designs to suit your vision, and we pride ourselves on using our extensive experience to make sure we create a space that meets up to your expectations, marrying the practical with the desirable, to deliver your home on time and on budget.
